Some of Dolly Sods best hikes include the Beaver Dam Trail, Bear Rocks Trail, Red Creek Trail, or the Dolly Sods loop of 22.5 miles. The Bear Rocks Preserve is easily accessible by car in the summer months, with gorgeous views just a short walk from the parking lot. While the park does offer 20 miles of hiking trails, the main attraction is Blackwater Falls, where all ages will enjoy the scenery and sounds as crisp, flowing water cascades 57 feet down the rocks. Day 3 – Smoke Hole or Seneca Caverns

Head underground for a tour of a completely different world at Smoke Hole Caverns and Seneca Caverns. One of the best things about these caverns is that weather is never a factor; you can enjoy these natural wonders any time of year! These incredible underground formations are filled with truly unique features like stalactites, stalagmites, bats, and flowing mineral-carrying water. At Seneca Caverns, you’ll descend 165 feet below the entrance to the caverns. And kids can dig for their own keepsakes at the Gemstone Mining stations, offered at both locations.

5-Day West Virginia Family Vacation Itinerary for Fishing

Day 1 – Fishing at Harman’s North Fork of the South Branch Potomac River

This private two-mile portion of the North Fork is a catch-and-release stream that provides excellent golden, brown, and brook trout fishing year-round. This exclusive experience is only available to guests of Harman’s so you’ll find this to be a peaceful, picture-perfect place to begin your fishing trip.

Day 2 – Fish the North Fork of Lunice Creek

Distance from Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins: 20 minutes; 13.1 miles

This creek is located just a 20-minute drive from Harman’s Log Cabins, and it’s a great place to set out on your second day of fishing. The stream offers several access points from WV Rt. 42 for anglers to find their lucky spots. The creek is stocked with trout twice monthly from February to April and once in May, but you also might net bass or other sportfish species.

Day 3 – Fly Fishing at Dry Fork

Dry Fork is one of the top fly-fishing destinations in West Virginia. This 40-mile tributary of the Black Fork and Cheat River near the Monongahela National Forest affords anglers a selection of brown, yellow, and rainbow trout. The stream is stocked in February and again from March through May.

Day 4 – Gandy Creek Trout Stream

Distance from Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins: 1 hour; 33.1 miles

Gandy Creek is a spectacular spot for an angler looking for a day of casting. The stream is known to fishing enthusiasts for its rainbow, brown, and brook trout. County Road 29 follows the stream for miles and affords many places to stop and fish. 

Day 5 – Fish Scenic Red Creek

Distance from Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins: 41 minutes; 32.8 miles

This scenic creek is stocked with trout January and February, and weekly from March through May, but you’ll find other species here as well. To cast near the stocking area, stay between WV Secondary Route 3 bridge upstream through Greenland Gap to Scherr.

Day 1 – Harman’s Hike & Family Picnic

The gemstone panning gives children the chance to find amethyst, rubies, emeralds, crystals, and perhaps even arrowheads. An easy yet exciting mini golf course is also available for ages 3 to 12. Finish your visit with a cavern tour. These tours last approximately one hour and will fascinate children and adults. Value-priced packages are available; kids under 3 are free for all attractions. Day 3 – Mountain Trail Rides’ Petting Zoo & Pony Rides

Connect with nature at Mountain Trail Rides during your West Virginia vacation. The barnyard petting zoo is a delight for young kids. Opt for the VIP pass for $15 to enjoy a hand-led horse ride, to feed the animals, and have a go at gemstone mining. If you’re up for more adventure, Mountain Trail Rides also offers horseback riding outings. Age restrictions apply, but pony rides are available for children aged 15 months and up for $6. Day 4 – Visit the Town of Seneca Rocks

The Seneca Rocks area has easy trails for little hikers to enjoy. Follow the marked path to the observation deck for picturesque views and great photo opportunities. Day 5 – Hovatter’s Wildlife Zoo
