Seneca Rocks History & Quick Facts

• The first recorded ascent was in 1935. However, in 1939 a group of climbers found an inscription at the rocks dating back to 1908.

• During World War II, army officers and enlisted men, known as the Mountain Training Group, trained at Seneca Rocks for the area’s geological similarities to northern Italy, where those in training were expected to deploy.
• Seneca Rocks rises 900 feet above Seneca Creek.
• This magnificent rock face is composed of white Tuscarora quartzite, also known as Tuscarora sandstone.
• At the base of Seneca Rocks is the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center where travelers can enjoy scheduled programs, events, and presentations.
